Shibir protests, throws eggs at court premises as two Awami League leaders seek bail

Two leaders of the banned Awami League have been attacked by the leaders and activists of the Islami Chhatra Shibir when they came to the Chapainawabganj District and Sessions Judge Court to seek bail. They are Ruhul Amin, the senior vice-president of the district Awami League and former chairman of the district council, and Golam Rabbani, the vice-president and president of the district branch of the Swadhinata Medical Council (Swachip). Eggs were also thrown at them while they were being taken from the court to the police station with police security on Wednesday afternoon.

Lawyers, eyewitnesses and court sources said that Ruhul Amin and Golam Rabbani were granted eight-week anticipatory bail by the High Court in the 2015 murder case of Shibir leader Asadullah Tuhin. As per the court’s order, they appeared before the District Sessions Judge Court on Wednesday and applied for bail. The court fixed July 28 as the date for hearing the bail application. Meanwhile, upon receiving news of the arrival of the two Awami League leaders, the leaders and activists of the Chhatra Shibir started gathering at the court premises from 12 noon. At around 12:15 pm, slogans of ‘fake fake’, ‘accused want execution’, ‘action of Shibir is direct action’, ‘action of Jamaat is direct action’ were raised on the balcony of the District Judge’s Court on the second floor. A supporter of Awami League leader Golam Rabbani was beaten up there. At that time, District and Sessions Judge Md. Mizanur Rahman adjourned the court and left for his private room. Later, when the police removed the protesters from the balcony of the court, the court judge gave an order regarding the application. While leaving the court, Shibir workers threw eggs at Ruhul Amin and Golam Rabbani in the court premises. The police took both of them to the police station.

In this regard, Abdul Aziz, president of the Chapainawabganj city branch of Islami Chhatra Shibir, said that the incident did not happen due to the organizational decision of Shibir. In 2015, Chhatra Shibir leader Tuhin was brutally murdered. Out of emotion and anger, activists and supporters committed this incident.

Senior lawyer for the accused, Md. Golam Kabir, commented that the incident that took place on the balcony of the District Judge’s Court and in the court premises was unwanted and an attempt to influence the court.

In this regard, Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Matiur Rahman said that the police have brought Ruhul Amin and Golam Rabbani for security reasons. No decision has been taken about them yet.

It is worth noting that on January 26, 2015, RAB members blindfolded Chhatra Shibir leader Asadullah Tuhin and took him from his house. Later, RAB claimed that he died in a road accident while fleeing from the RAB’s car. On December 25, 2024, 9 years after the incident, Asadullah Tuhin’s maternal uncle Md. Kabirul Islam filed a murder case in the Magistrate’s Court. The case has named 28 people, including former Home Minister, then Director General of RAB, former MP Abdul Odud, RAB and police officials, and Awami League leaders. The second and third accused in the case are Golam Rabbani and Rahul Amin, respectively.
